Vicia faba In zones 7 and above, plant 3 weeks prior to your first killing frost. When fall sown, magnificent stands of impenetrable vegetation reach 6 feet by late May. Tolerant of temporarily waterlogged soils in winter. Winter hardy to at least 10°F. Spring sow in colder regions. Best stands obtained by planting 3 inches deep, but can also be broadcast at ½–¾ pound per 100 square feet; 5 pounds per 1000 square feet, or 200 pounds per acre.
